Dear Chinese students in Victoria and Tasmania,

To ensure the safety of your study experience in Australia,Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne kindly reminds you of the following:

1.Beware of Telecom Scams!

There is a rising number of telecom fraud cases targeting Chinese students overseas, which can be very harmful. The best way to protect yourself from these scams is not to give fraudsters any chance! If you receive calls saying “This is the XX Police Department, you are suspected of being involved in a criminal case,” “This is the Chinese Consulate, you have a document to collect,” “This is the Immigration Bureau, your visa has been canceled,” “This is the Post Office, you have a package to collect,” or similar messages, please be aware - these are all telecom scams.

Do not trust them, do not respond, and simply hang up! If you receive a voicemail telling you to collect important documents or a package, or concerning a domestic case, hang up immediately. If someone asks for your bank account details or requests a transfer without confirming their identity, hang up! In any situation where personal information is requested by phone, hang up! Never transfer money to strangers! Additionally, do not exchange currency, rent properties, or pay tuition fees through unofficial online platforms. For financial transactions, always use banks, official websites, or reliable platforms.

2.Be alerted about safety issues

Adhere strictly to local laws and regulations, avoid areas with poor security, plan personal trips rationally, and be cautious about engaging in high-risk activities. Keep your identification documents safe and regularly check the validity of your passport and visa. If you face discrimination or provocation, handle the situation rationally, and avoid physical conflict. If necessary, call the police or seek assistance from your university.

3.Engage in Campus and Local Community Life

Pay attention to your own physical and mental health. Try to cultivate a positive and optimistic attitude.

4.Stay in Touch with Family

Maintain regular communication with your family members, and share the information of your Australian phone number, address, school name and major, student ID number, and at least two emergency contact numbers with your family in China, in case of emergencies.

Please regularly check our consulate's website and WeChat official account, and carefully review the safety reminders in the consular protection section. We wish you success in your studies and a safe life in Melbourne!
