2025 "International Chinese Language Day" Celebration — Chinese: A Gift Across Time and Space

On April 24, 2025, to mark the 16th United Nations "International Chinese Language Day," the Chinese Consulate-General in Melbourne, in collaboration with the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria (CLTAV), hosted a themed event titled "Chinese: A Gift  Across Time and Space" at Camberwell Grammar School.

The event was attended by Consul-General Mr. Fang Xinwen and his wife Ms. Zeng Hui, Counsellor Ms. Ding Li, Camberwell Grammar School Principal Mr. Ben Jeacocke, Acting Deputy Secretary of the Victorian Department of Education Mr. Chris Thompson, President of CLTAV Mr. Xu Jixing, former President of the Legislative Council of Victoria Mr. Bruce Atkinson, State Member of parliament for Kew Ms Jess Wilson MP and Melbourne City Councillor Ms. Gladys Liu. Over 300 representatives from 23 schools in the consular district also participated.

In his speech, Consul-General Fang emphasized that Chinese is a treasured gift from the Chinese nation to the world—a bridge language that connects the future of humanity, and a powerful force in promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning. He highlighted that Chinese education not only imparts language and culture, but also builds bridges of understanding and friendship between China and Australia, deepening mutual respect and connection between the two peoples.

Guests in attendance affirmed the important role of the Chinese language in fostering friendships among Chinese and Australian youth. They praised the event for providing students with a valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in the Chinese language and culture, and for showcasing the vitality and appeal of Chinese as one of the world's major languages.

The event featured vibrant cultural workshops where students eagerly participated in traditional Chinese calligraphy, painting, tea art, dragon dancing, and paper-cutting, offering a hands-on experience of Chinese culture. Additionally, more than 80 students from 10 secondary schools took part in a Chinese recitation competition, with 12 students receiving outstanding awards for their performances.

During the event, Consul-General Fang was interviewed by Australia Chinese TV and AusFocus. The coverage was later promoted on platforms such as Xiaohongshu and YouTube, receiving widespread attention and positive feedback.
